Mobile-West Rotary annually gives scholarship money to high-school seniors attending college in Mobile. The scholarship was named in honor of Ray Cohn, who was a charter member Mobile-West and was the scholarship chairman for over 30 years.
The scholarship is awarded based on civic involvement, extra-curricular activities, GPA, recommendations and an essay describing how the student incorporates the 4-way test into their life.
In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics adopted by Rotary 11 years later. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:
Of the things we think, say or do
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The application is delivered to high school counselors in February of each year.
